Due to a puzzling optical illusion, a lady caused serious confusion when she showed off her new hat.

The environmental designer and Tiktok user Otelia Carmen shared a video of her new hat and immediately became popular for this strange, obviously discolored item. 

She said: "So, I bought this green hat in the store today, I took it home, and when I took it out, I thought:'Why is this brown?' 

"Then realized: metamerism. This is why lighting is so important in interior design."

Metamerism is the color change seen in colored items due to different spectral emission from different light sources. 

Basically, each light source has its own "color", so when it is projected onto a colored surface, it will affect the color of that surface. 

In this case, we can see that in the store lights, Otelia's hat is green, but the lights in her home make it look brown. 

Even in her own home, the color of the hat has changed from the reddish brown in the dining room to the green in the bedroom. 

She decided to take the hat out and put it in the sun, once and for all, to see what color it was.

In this video, she showed that the hat is actually brown. 

The two videos received a total of 6 million views, and commenters were stunned.

"So... it's green, brown, red," wrote one confused audience, while another said: "My heart is broken."

An audience member wrote: "We are again wearing a'gold and white or black and blue' dress", referring to the fabric color debate that swept the world in 2017.

Another added: "My brain can't understand what's going on here."
