WHEELING – The Fellowship of Students, a non-denominational Christian club at Wheeling Park High School, decided to hold a hat day Friday to benefit the Hurricane Ian disaster relief efforts.

Teacher Michael Romick said one of the club members had the idea of students paying $1 to wear a hat in school – something that is not allowed on a typical day in school – with the money going to the American Red Cross.

“The variety of hats never ceases to amaze me. It’s great. Most wear baseball caps, but there are Cat in the Hat hats, animal heads, top hats and bucket hats,” he said.

The activity not only is fun for the students, but allows them to practice the Christian tenet of helping others.

“We will donate to the Red Cross because they allow you to earmark it for Hurricane victims in Florida,” he said of the money.

Romick said he had not yet had a chance to count the money, but estimated there were about 120 envelopes containing $1 bills collected as of Friday morning.

Romick said last year club members collected funds for Ukraine war relief as well.

Romick, who has taught at the high school for eight years, is a 1978 graduate of Park.

“I’ve always been proud of this high school. We have really good kids,” he said.

In addition to being the club’s advisor, Romick teaches dual credit college composition, an elective film studies class and is chairman of the WPHS English Department.

The club was formed last year by the students and meets once a month.
