It was just 100 years ago today, September 13, 1922, when the fashion NAZI’s really started acting like actual NAZI’s. It seems people will riot over just about anything, and, no offense to the city that never sleeps, it seems New York is just one of those places. At this time in the 20’s, and beforehand, straw hats were all the rage, but times were-a-changing, and the younger generations didn’t like these derby hats. So, a prank started, why not knock the hats off the wearers, nothing bad could come from that?

Originally, these delinquents had “officially” claimed September 15th as the end of straw hats. However, these kids obviously couldn’t count, and on the 13th, small mobs of kids started knocking hats off of unsuspecting pedestrians. When a group managed to knock the hats off of tough dock workers, these men fought back, beating several of the kids, who called up their friends, and before you knew it, a massive riot broke out all over the city, with actual violence and beatings, with many hospitalized. Finally, the adults had put a stop to this, and some minor offenders were spanked, others thrown in jail, and many more beaten to a pulp. 100 years ago today, teens in New York found out that if you play stupid pranks, you win stupid prizes.
