In this episode of In The Know: Upcycled, fashion icon and DIY fashion genius, Wandy the Maker (@wandythemaker) provides a tutorial on how to turn fabric waste into a unique reversible patchwork bucket hat!

Step 1: Cut out your waste fabric

First cut your waste fabric. Wandy cuts his works into various sizes to get a more "irregular appearance".

Step 2: Arrange your fabric pieces

Next, arrange the shredded pieces on a 24 inch x 24 inch paper. Wandy alternately used camouflage and solid-color printed fabrics to "create that sense of path."

Step 3: Sewing your parts together

Once your pieces are arranged the way you want, it's time to sew them together! Use a sewing machine to sew the right sides of your clothes together, using a straight stitch with a quarter-inch seam allowance. Don't forget to stitch back at the beginning and end of the seam to hold everything in place. Repeat this process for the remaining fabric pieces.

Step 4: Cut out your pattern

Once your patchwork fabric is made, you can lay out the cut pattern paper and cut out the pieces of the hat.

Step 5: Sew the hats together

After you cut your swatches, it's time to sew them together. For the sides of the hat, Wandy puts their right sides together and fixed them. Then, he sews them to make the main part of the hat. Next, Wandy sewed the top of the hat to the body. Since this part is curved, it must take time to sew! It helps to have a solid surface, such as a sewing table. Finally, Wandy sews the brim together, and then sews the finished brim to the rest of the hat.

To make your hat reversible, repeat steps 1-5 with the lining fabric. This will be on the inside of your patterned hat.

Step 7: Combine the hat with the lining

Turn the lined hat over and place it on the patterned hat. Then, align the edges of the edges and fix them together. Always sew a straight stitch on the edge, leaving a 2 inch opening so you can turn it out from the right again. If the seams along the brim are indented in this part, just pinch them out with your fingers and iron them to get the full width of the brim.

Step 8: Stitch the opening

Before turning out the right side of the hat, sew the opening you left. The finished product is a completely unique, reversible and sustainable bucket cap made from waste fabric!
