For Gida’s debut issue, Hassan-Odukale tapped Ivorian visual artist Nuits Balneaires to create the cover image. The result is a striking visual of a person in a white shirt turned away from the camera while the shadows of leaves fall on them. Within the journal itself are stories featuring some of West Africa’s most prominent artists like designer Adeju Thompson, artist Ayanefe Olarrinde, photographer Nybé Ponzio, and more. One essay explores the concept of the Ikenga spirit and its importance to the Igbo people. An artistic reimagination of the classic Ikenga by Nigeria-based artist Kelechi Chiwendu Kelechi also appears in the journal, alongside a photo series of Bamako, the capital of Mali and more. These stories are bound together in a dark, moody and noticeably solid zine.

But ultimately, it was a labor of love. “I was privileged enough with the opportunity to travel and meet so many people I wouldn’t have met, building real relationships with them which led to them being a part of making Gida,” Hassan-Odukale says. “Being able to travel and explore for work is a massive highlight, as it is something I’m super passionate about. Halfway through the Gida journey, I brought a close friend on to be co-editor, Mira Makadia. We went to school together and always connected on similar things from a young age. She is a researcher based in London. When you can find someone who gets it, it makes the whole process a lot easier.”
