During Gabby Petito's investigation, the Florida State Police who publicly insisted that they were eyeing Brian Laundrie admitted that they actually mistakenly believed that he was his mother.

"They are built in a similar way," Northport Police Department spokesperson Josh Taylor told WINK on Monday, and the case has aroused national attention.

Last month, outside the North Port home where Laundrie lives with his parents, the police have been conducting round-the-clock surveillance because the 23-year-old man was designated as the only person interested in the disappearance of his girlfriend.

However, when his parents reported his sudden disappearance, Laundrie slipped through their fingers, which triggered a weeks-long hunt that didn't end until his body was found in the huge Carlton Reserve last week. .

On Monday, in resolving this serious and costly error, Taylor blushed and said that "there is no perfect case."

Taylor said police have been tracking the laundry since Petitto’s parents reported her disappearance on September 11-more than a week after her boyfriend returned to Florida from a road trip alone.

The police stated that they witnessed him leaving his home in his Mustang on September 13 and claimed that he had returned two days later.

Northport Police Chief Todd Garrison insisted at a September 16 press conference, “We know where Brian Laundrie is.”

But the next day, when Laundrie's parents reported him missing, everything fell apart, saying that he set out for an excursion on September 14 but failed to return. His parents later said that he actually left home on September 13.

Taylor later admitted that they were convinced that they had witnessed Laudry's return to the Mustang home, "but we now know that's not true."

"I believe it is his mother who wears the baseball cap," Taylor said of the person they saw.

After the laundry told the police that they went to the nature reserve to collect vehicles, the wild horse was later seized by the authorities as evidence.

"They came back from the park with that Mustang. So who did it? Yes? Like, if you think your son has been missing since Tuesday, you will drive his car home," Taylor said .

"Therefore, it doesn't make sense for anyone to do this if he is not there. So the person who goes out with a baseball cap is considered to be Brian."

Lawyers for the Laundrie family said that Chris and Roberta are currently mourning for their late son in a secret location.

On Wednesday, Laundrie's remains-mostly bones that had rotted for several weeks, were found in a nature reserve near his parents' home.

Petitto's strangled body was found in a remote campsite in Wyoming on September 19, and her death was convicted of homicide.

Laundrie was not charged for Pettitto's death, but was named in a federal fraud order in Wyoming for using her debit card to charge more than $1,000 while driving back to Florida.
