Alpine team changes in 2022 to help improve F1 status

Although the Enstone-based team is focused on finishing fifth in the Constructors’ Championship this year, Rossi knows that their long-term ambitions are much greater, and it needs to “build muscle” if it is to move on.

Rossi's ultimate goal is to regularly win the game before the end of the next rule cycle in 2024/2025, so Rossi is ready to change Alpine's approach to ensure its goal can be achieved.

In an interview with Autosport, Rossi said that he ranked fifth in the standings for the third consecutive year, which is not a long-term satisfactory level for the team.

"This is not what we want," he said. "I obviously want the teams to compete for the podium and win before the end of the next rule, which means 2024/25, depending on where they decide to move to the new rule package.

"But to do this, we need to make some improvements to the team. I think the team has moved from P9 to P5, and we have done a good job in the past few years before we reach the plateau.

"But now, to enter the next stage and become the best of the top teams, not just the best of other teams, this requires another evolution.

"So what I want to do is to maintain the momentum of last season, that's why I want to maintain the fifth position. I don't want us to go backwards.

"This year we learned a lot in operation, so this is always a plus point. We will apply it next year, but then we will need to build muscles to grow and move from P5 to P1, one game after another, One season after the end of the season in the next few years."

Rossi believes that Alpine needs to adapt to the new challenges and opportunities brought about by the F1 cost ceiling, which means ensuring that resources are better focused on areas that have an impact.

He said this would require Alpine to operate in a different structure than in recent years, when the budget was not so severely restricted.

He explained: "According to the new regulations, we will be below the cost ceiling, so the formula we will use next year is not necessarily the formula we have used in the past few years."

"We need to adapt to this new environment, and I think we have enough assets to do this. Why? Because it won't invest money on issues anymore. Everyone will have the same cost cap. It will be more. Land involves how you execute and how you decide to allocate your investment.

"Furthermore, being a work team is very important because it means that the effective integration of PUs into the chassis may be critical to performance.

"Then, there is savvy, knowledge and experience. We have 45 years of experience, so we may resort to this more. There is also the fact that we will rely on Groupe Renault as the middle road in the long run. A safe runway, not putting everything in danger every year.

"Then, the team is also evolving in terms of performance drivers that will be defined by regulations. We have seen aerodynamics become the most important in the past few years. We will see it in the future of the new regulations: but maybe aviation , Or other departments, because cars will be different.

"I will make the team move towards an organization that maximizes this set of variables: perfectly integrate the PU into the chassis and push it to areas that are critical to performance. This is the idea."

Alpine adopted a unique team structure this year, so there is no designated team leader.

Rather, Rossi is a member of the senior management team, working hard to push the team forward with Executive Director Marcin Budkowski and Motorsport Director Davide Brivio.

Although some people are skeptical about the operation of the system, Rossi believes it has already paid off-but he does not rule out changing it next year.

"I think the results on the track speak for themselves," he said when asked whether the management structure was effective.

"Scored in 15 games, plus a victory, we walk on the track every weekend, it doesn't look like we are deceiving ourselves. So it is enough for us to achieve such an outstanding result."

"Is this the right organization to meet the next set of challenges and continue to climb the ladder? Well, I will evaluate it at the end of the season.

"I want to end the season with P5​​ first, and secondly make sure that at Enstone and Viry, everyone is focused on developing new cars for the next season.

"Then I will make my decision on the development of the entire organization, especially the development of senior management."
